About

KAPRENG PINOY

Over the years, I have accumulated thousands of photographs of just about anything which, I believe, would be of sentimental, educational, and entertainment value to me and the people around me. Each of these photographs has its own story to tell. Stories that draw emotions, learnings, and fun because, the fact is, we often put on a good smile in front of a camera. That smile does not tell the whole story and may even sometimes, intentionally or unintentionally, hide the truth behind the visuals.

Before I shoot, I always ask myself, how can I impart and elicit the same admiration, awe, wonderment, or amusement that I feel in that instance to the person who will see the photograph?

If I do the walk, how can I make you experience the walk?

It is in this context that I thought of this platform to share not only the pictures but, more importantly, the stories and the experiences behind them.

For what is a good story if it is not shared?

REY MONTALBO Jr.

Rey was born and grew up in the small town of Pontevedra, Capiz. In the Philippines, the province of Capiz used to be derided as the land of “aswangs” or witches but, in recent years, has been known as the seafood capital of the country for its abundant supply of shrimps, prawns, crabs, and milkfish.

Early in grade school, he discovered a talent for drawing and found himself doing posters for various school activities. This small amount of talent has led him to enroll in a vocational high school where he took up Architectural Drafting as a course. Here, he learned the art of using the pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, and oil paint as media of expression. In his last year, he started using instamatic cameras as a means to document events and preserve memories.

All that stopped as he pursued a course in economics and business management in college and, after graduation, a career in banking and finance. Nevertheless, he continued to carry camera that progressed from an instamatic 110 to an analog SLR, a digital SLR, and a mirrorless DSLR, only to regress (?) to a Samsung mobile phone camera.

The progression from an instamatic 110 to a DSLR was fueled by the belief that he is an artist. With the advent of advanced mobile phone cameras from Samsung, he has now realized that he is really a historian and safekeeper of memories rather than an artist-photographer.

WHY “KAPRE”?

In Philippines mythology, the kapre is a creature that may be described as a tree giant, being a tall (7-9 ft(2.1-2.7m)), dark-coloured, hairy, and mascular creature. Kapres are also said to have a very strong body odour and to sit in tree branches to smoke.

Kapreng Pinoy creates a distinctive unique only to the Philippines word with lineage to Capiz.

KEEPER OF EXPERIENCES

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
